As another season approaches we are already busy with harvesting, tilling, feeding, transplanting, and planting early summer crops. Each day the list of tasks gets longer and before we know it summer will be here! The cold frames and greenhouse are packed with seedlings—tons of new flowers and varieties are being introduced to the farm and I am really excited about all our new trials.
This spring has brought some extra excitement—specialty tulips are blooming in the greenhouse! Last November, I planted 1,200 bulbs with a hope of early blooms—sure enough by mid April the first varieties began to explode in the greenhouse! Over the past month I have been digging them up by the bulb and storing them in the cooler. A cool thing about tulips is that they hold in the fridge up to 6 weeks, not in water, just on the bulb. When we are ready to open and sell them, I simply cut the bulb off and put them in water to mature. Some of the tulips in full bloom have lasted over 2 weeks on my kitchen table and seem to only get more beautiful with age! In February I also planted Anenome corms, and after a brutal March (-20 temps!) I did not think they made it. However I am pleased to announce that almost all of them have put out beautiful green foliage and I hope for the first blooms by the end of May!
I know our customers are very excited for our opening dates and summer announcements and I am ready to give you the full scoop!
